DigitHer: together with women to bridge the digital gap

Valore D’s DigitHer project: what is it and how does it work?

It’s called DigitHer – Leveraging Skills for Empowerment, the Future of Women is Digital, and it is among the projects selected by the Italian government’s Fund for the Digital Republic – Social Enterprise, as part of the Bando Futura initiative, with the objective of strengthening digital skills and ensuring that participants have better opportunities for access and growth within the world of work.

The aim of the DigitHer project, powered by Valore D and Generation Italy, is to train 150 young women, aged 18-34, from all across Italy, who are unemployed or first-time jobseekers (or in unsatisfactory employment), on the ins and outs of digital professions and to help them find work. In this way, DigitHer aims to respond to the rising demand for professionals specializing in digital fields and, at the same time, to combat the clear digital gap between genders, which is the result of prejudices and stereotypes.

The DigitHer project – which is inclusive, experiential, intensive and completely free – is oriented towards the provision of training for the two most sought-after IT position: Junior Java Developers, who deal with the development of software applications and the management of web services; and Junior Data Engineers, who are concerned with the compilation and organization of databases and the analysis of large datasets.

The DigitHer training courses involve 6 classes, each lasting around 14 weeks on a full-time basis (9am-6pm), and are delivered online to facilitate participation across Italy. At the end of the training course, participants are given recruitment support with interviews held with partner companies of Valore D and Generation Italy.

What social impact is DigitHer having? Let’s take a look at some interesting facts and figures.

The Fund for the Digital Republic is the result of a public-private social partnership (the Italian government working with the Associazione di Fondazioni e di Casse di risparmio – ACRI) and, on an experimental basis for the year 2022-2026, has allocated around €350 million. It is funded though payments made by foundations that originally arose out of banks. The objective is to boost digital skills and develop Italy’s digital transition. Operating within the digitalization objectives set out in the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the Italian Complementary Fund (FNC), May 2022 saw the establishment of the Fund for the Digital Republic – Social Enterprise, a not-for-profit organization entirely owned by ACRI and set up to implement the fund’s programmes.
